Knee Pain and Injuries

Knee joint pain is a common complaint that affects any of part the bony structures that form a knee joint, the kneecap or the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage of the knee. It may be the result of an injury or medical conditions and can get aggravated by physical activity, as well as obesity.

Knee injuries can disrupt daily life and limit physical activities. From ligament tears to fractures, knee injuries vary in severity. It’s crucial to recognize symptoms early and seek appropriate medical attention to prevent further complications. Whether you’re an athlete or someone leading a regular lifestyle, understanding knee injuries is vital for prompt intervention.

Symptoms of some common knee conditions:

Knee pain symptoms include stiffness, a limited range of motion, a grating sensation while bending, and locking of the knee. Unbearable pain that does not improve with rest and swelling if you are taking blood thinners or you have a bleeding disorder.

  • Pain and tenderness inside the knee below the joint, worsened by stair climbing, due to bursa inflammation.
  • Gradual cartilage wear in the knee joint leads to reduced space between bones, causing bone-on-bone rubbing and painful bone spur formation.
  • Frontal knee pain and kneecap discomfort, hindering stair climbing or kneeling due to stiffness and pain.
  • Typically arises from sudden sports-related twists or turns, leading to pain, swelling, and knee locking; the meniscus acts as a shock absorber between thigh and shinbone.

Knee Pain Causes and Management

Persistent knee pain can significantly affect the quality of life. Causes range from arthritis like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis and overuse to underlying medical conditions. Effective pain management involves a combination of medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Learn about strategies to alleviate knee pain and improve your overall well-being.
In cases where conservative treatments don’t suffice, knee surgery becomes a consideration. Surgical interventions such as knee arthroscopy, knee replacement, and (ACL) ligament reconstruction can provide lasting relief.

Sport Injuries :

Sports injuries may be sustained by athletes in any part of the body during sports-related activity including training and competition. Dr Ashutosh is one of very few sports injury doctor in Pune who have a practice focussed on treating knee problems.
These injuries are commonly acute but may develop over time due to overuse.
The most common sports injuries occur around the limbs and joints due to sprains, strains, fractures, and dislocations. The knee especially is highly susceptible to such injuries in sports athletes.

Meniscus Injury:

A meniscus injury occurs when there is damage to the C-shaped cartilage in the knee joint, known as the meniscus. This crucial structure serves as a shock absorber, cushioning the joint during movement, and also aids in stabilizing the knee. Meniscus injuries are often the result of sudden twisting motions or direct impacts to the knee, commonly experienced during sports activities or sudden movements. Such injuries can lead to symptoms like pain, swelling, and restricted range of motion, impacting daily activities and athletic performance. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for managing meniscus injuries effectively and preventing long-term complications.

ACL:

An ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury is a significant concern for athletes and individuals engaged in physical activities. The ACL is a crucial ligament that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia), playing a pivotal role in stabilizing the knee joint during movements. Injuries to the ACL frequently occur during sports activities characterized by sudden stops, changes in direction, or direct impacts to the knee. These injuries often manifest with distinct symptoms, including sudden and severe pain, swelling within hours of the injury, a sensation of knee instability or giving way, and sometimes an audible “pop” sound at the time of the injury.

PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) Injury :

The posterior cruciate ligament is one of the major ligaments in the knee joint that helps stabilize the knee during movement. PCL injuries often occur due to direct impact to the front of the knee or from sudden hyperextension. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and instability. Treatment options depend on the severity of the injury and may range from conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy, and bracing to surgical reconstruction.

Knee Patella Instability:

Patellar instability refers to a condition where the patella (kneecap) is prone to dislocating or moving out of its normal position. This can be caused by various factors such as injury, structural abnormalities, muscle weakness, or overuse. Treatment may involve physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles, bracing, or in severe cases, surgery to realign or stabilize the patella.

Cartilage Injuries in Knee:

Cartilage injuries in the knee can involve damage to the articular cartilage (covering the ends of bones) or meniscal cartilage (shock-absorbing cartilage between the bones). These injuries can result from trauma, overuse, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and sometimes locking or catching sensation in the knee. Treatment options vary depending on the severity and location of the injury and may include rest, physical therapy, medications, injections, or in some cases, surgical procedures such as arthroscopy or cartilage restoration techniques.
