When to Visit the Shoulder Injury Clinic

The most common sign of shoulder injury is pain. The pain can be mild and achy or intense and searing. Identifying a specific pain location within the shoulder can help the doctor diagnose the problem.

Other indications and symptoms in addition to shoulder pain include:

  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Inability to rotate or raise your arm through a normal range of movement
  • Your shoulder may feel loose
  • The shoulder may appear deformed

Causes of Shoulder Injuries

In most cases, shoulder injuries may occur as a result of injuries to soft tissue which are normally brought on by overuse from repetitive action at work, in sports, or in leisure activities. Fractures of the shoulder bones are also rather common and typically arise from trauma like falls or car accidents.

Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is a degenerative condition characterized by cartilage breakdown associated with joint deterioration. The shoulder can also become inflamed with rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory condition that affects the bones and cartilage. Both of these forms of arthritis have the potential to eventually hurt or harm the shoulder joint.

Rotator Cuff Tear of Shoulder:

A rotator cuff tear occurs when one or more tendons in the shoulder’s rotator cuff are torn, leading to pain, weakness, and limited range of motion. Common causes include repetitive overhead movements or sudden trauma. Symptoms may include shoulder pain that worsens at night, difficulty lifting or reaching overhead, and weakness in the affected arm. Treatment options range from conservative approaches like rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication to surgical repair in severe cases.

Shoulder Dislocation/Instability:

Shoulder dislocation or instability refers to the shoulder joint’s abnormal movement, where the upper arm bone (humerus) pops out of the shoulder socket. This can occur due to trauma, overuse, or inherent joint laxity. Symptoms include sudden shoulder pain, swelling, and an apparent deformity in the shoulder. Recurrent dislocations may lead to chronic instability and weakness. Treatment involves reducing the dislocation, immobilizing the shoulder, and rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to stabilize the joint.

Frozen Shoulder:

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint, leading to restricted movement. The exact cause is often unknown but may be linked to inflammation, injury, or prolonged immobilization. Symptoms typically progress through three stages: freezing (increasing stiffness and pain), frozen (persistent stiffness with some improvement in pain), and thawing (gradual recovery of motion). Treatment may include pain management, physical therapy to improve range of motion, and in some cases, corticosteroid injections or surgical intervention to release tight tissues and improve mobility.

Shoulder Arthritis:

Shoulder arthritis refers to the inflammation and degeneration of the shoulder joint cartilage. It can result from aging, wear and tear, previous injuries, or autoimmune conditions. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, and sometimes swelling. Treatment options vary from conservative measures like rest, physical therapy, and medications to surgical interventions such as shoulder joint replacement.

Shoulder Fracture:

A shoulder fracture is a break in one or more of the bones that make up the shoulder joint, including the clavicle (collarbone), scapula (shoulder blade), or humerus (upper arm bone). Fractures can occur due to trauma, such as a fall onto the shoulder or a direct blow. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the shoulder. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the fracture but may involve immobilization with a sling, physical therapy, or surgical intervention to realign and stabilize the bones.

Shoulder Impingement:

Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff tendons or bursa in the shoulder become compressed or pinched between the bones of the shoulder. This can lead to inflammation, pain, and reduced range of motion. Impingement can result from overuse, poor posture, muscle imbalances, or structural abnormalities in the shoulder joint. Treatment typically involves rest, activity modification, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder, and in some cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery to relieve pressure on the affected structures.
